Regulating data security vs. devices

Sombit Mishra

As reported by FierceMarkets, 89% of US health workers use their own smartphones for work purposes.  As the Meaningful Use transition heats up, it will be key for hospitals to focus on securing and integrating data from smartphones and independent tracking devices (e.g. activity trackers, glucose monitors, hand-washing sensors for physicians) with HIPAA-compliant cloud platforms.  Many physicians indicate a discomfort with how data is managed in the cloud, and how they can take advantage of it.  But the questions that remain about cloud security and Meaningful Use should not be used as an excuse to limit device usage.

What's clear is that more programs/hospitals need to focus on educating administrators and physicians about cloud security and device integration.
